Tired of Wall Street Banks that crashed our economy, trashed our public sector, take bailouts, don’t pay taxes, and buy elections? Bring your friends and relatives to this event; we need to bring Whatcom County money back home. Whatcom County residents hold $2.2 billion of deposits in accounts with Bank of America ($347.1 million), KeyBank($234.8 million), US Bank ($208.9 million), and other non-local banks. That’s $ 2.2 billion out of a total of roughly $3.7 billion deposits. That’s a lot of money sent to Wall St. that could stay here and fund 9 times more than that in local businesses. If our government won’t limit the size of “too big to fail” banks that endanger our economy more than ever, we need to take things into our own hands. (Witness the failure of the Brown-Kauffman amendment that would have limited banks to no more than 2-3% of GDP, defeated in the Senate last year by banking lobbyists.) Currently we have 6 banks controlling 60% of our GDP, and going international to produce bubbles in countries like Brazil; when their gambling brings the next financial meltdown, there won’t be any government big enough to bail them out!
Speakers Kristi Laguzza-Boosman, author of “Plan B, – Recalibrating an Economy in Decline, Building an Economy in Balance”, from Twisp, Washington, and Jared Gardner of “Real Wealth” of Portland, (and of the Oregon State Bank movement), will discuss the merits and accomplishments of localized economies to produce community resilience.
“Move Your Money” campaign was started 1 and a half years ago by Arianna Huffington, former US Senate Banking Committee chief economist Rob Johnson, filmmaker Eugene Jarecki, and “A New Way Forward’s” Tiffiniy Cheng. By May 2010, $5 billion had been shifted out of big banks to local ones, and by 3/25/11, 4 million accounts were moved, BOA lost 400,000 accounts in 2010. Visit the website moveyourmoneyproject.org for news updates around the country: articles like “Village of Hempstead Closes Chase Account to Protest Foreclosures”, and other cool stuff.
Companion actions happening Friday April 15th in front of BOA, US Bank, Key Bank and Chase downtown urging customers to MYM, and protesting budget cuts that starve the middle and low-income classes while subsidizing bank bailouts (over a $trillion to Goldman Sachs alone). At 3:30PM more groups will join us at BOA for the lack-of-tax protest. Please come if you can!
Next step: get institutions like government, universities, etc. to move their accounts. We’ll need help in these campaigns.

End of panel discussion (Georgina Downs + Laura Potts + Liz Rothschild) the question was about whether politicians acknowledge PRECAUTIONARY PRINCIPLE in practise, i.e. the idea that pesticide users should have to prove safety before they can spray. It was felt that European law had this sort of idea established, with more political acceptance and therefore this should soon work down into laws for the UK.

This is a beautiful bank foreclosure house in Portland, Oregon. Most foreclosures are not this bad. The house looked like it either hadn’t been occupied for years or someone got old and died in the house. There is mold everywhere. The bank cleaned the trash and removed the carpet. The entire house is a disaster. The worst part is the roof or lack of.
